Gandhi's simplicity
Gandhi thought that buying things for himself was a waste of money. Gandhi never bought clothes at all, he always made his own clothes at his home although he had a decent amount of money, and he always dressed like a poor western man. In fact if a person had no idea who Gandhi was and saw him for the first time, they would think that Gandhi was homeless and he had no money. Mahatma Gandhi did not believe in wasting away money by doing things like buying clothes when he could make them himself.
Even though he only bought what he needed to survive, he was happy and he lived a happy life. When the British took control of India, they started selling clothes and other goods, all of the Indian townsfolk got hooked on to the fancy items from the British, and started buying them.
Soon, Gandhi was trying to make people stop buying from the British. He said that India needed to be independent, and show that they could do things on their own, that they didn't need and want Britain to be invading their country. Nobody listened to him and then the British started to conquer India.
Gandhi's style of living was very simple. He removed the caste barrier. He called the untouchables as the Harijan, the children of God. He was a reformer. He told the Indians that they should do manual labor. He advised the students of his time to read vocational subjects in order to be self-dependent. And also advised to introduce hand-spinning as a subject in educational institutions. He was a strong supporter of agriculture.
